PAYYOLI

Payyoli is a small village in the district of Kozhikode (Calicut), South Kerala. Situated on the North Malabar Coast, it is a quiet

destination with golden stretch of sand and shallow waters. Though it is known for its beach, a host of other spots make it a site for visit. It is also home to the athlete legend PT Usha. Payyoli is only 30 Kms away from Kozhikode (Calicut).

 

Attractions of this place include the quiet, palm lined beach, the Kunjali Marrrakar Museum, Velliyamkallu and Trikkottur Perumalpuram Temple. The presiding diety of the temple is Lord Shiva. Trikkottur Perumalpuram Temple is located near the Payyoli beach. This place is well connected to the other parts of the state. Weather conditions are similar to the other parts of Kerala.

 

 

 
 
Velliyamkallu : A tourist attraction in payyoli beach

Velliyamkallu This huge rock, much dreaded by navigators, was once a vantage point for the Kunjali Marakkar to attack the invading Portuguese. This point is about 10 km from payyoli beach. The great malayalam novelist M.Mukundan mentioned it in his novel " Daivathinte vikruthkal "

It is famous as the India’s Best Athlete P.T Usha was born she was also coined as Payyoli Express.The beach have silver sand and the shore of the beach is dotted with palm grooves .The sea water here is shallow and ideal for swimming and water sport.

The Marakars were admirals of Zamorins. who valiantly resisted the Portuguese on high seas. Kunhali marakkar built a fort on the southern bank of Mooriad river which was completely destroyed by Portuguese with the help of Zamorins for various reasons.

Thikkodi Light House

Thikkoti Light House is located in Thikkoti Village in Calicut Kozhikode District of Kerala State of India. It has a history behind its construction . It was established on 1847 and was established over rock shores where once the shipwreck happened near that beach. Therefore to remind the sailor of this accident this lighthouse was built.

The Light house is about 33.5 meter high and tourists are allowed to visit this lighthouse and enjoy the scenic view of Arabian Sea from this light house. It is located about 30 km from Calicut city.

P.T Usha

Pilavullakandi Thekkeparambil Usha (born June 27, 1964), popularly known as P. T. Usha, is an Indian track and field athlete from the state of Kerala. P. T. Usha has been associated with Indian athletics since 1979. She is regarded as one of the greatest athletes India has ever produced and is often called the "queen of Indian track and field".

 

She is nicknamed the Payyoli Express. Currently she runs the Usha School of Athletics at Koyilandy in Kerala. P. T. Usha was born in the village of Payyoli, Kozhikode District, Kerala. In 1976 the Kerala State Government started a Sports School for women, and Usha was chosen to represent her district.
